Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to review the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on target, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
