Fireworks along with a Toast to Life: Israelis Rejoice at Deal Bringing Back Captives
The declaration regarding a deal projected to result in the freeing of hostages detained within Gaza for more than 24 months has generated joy and relief throughout Israel.
A group that has advocated for the release of Israeli captives held in Gaza expressed “profound gratitude” for what it termed a “landmark achievement”.
The agreement—still requiring agreed upon the Israeli war cabinet—involves the release of 20 living hostages and the bodies of 28 deceased captives in return for 250 Palestinian detainees imprisoned for life in Israeli jails plus 1,700 individuals from the Gaza region.
So far, 148 hostages have been returned—most as part of earlier truce agreements—51 sets of remains have been retrieved and eight hostages were freed by rescue.
Celebratory Moments in Hostages’ Square
Joyous gatherings took place in Hostages’ Square in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals assembled before the agreement’s signing.
The gathering began clapping and dancing under American and Israeli banners—one woman holding up a sign saying: “We adore Trump.”
“It’s a magical day,” she expressed.
Another, Yael, aged 50, cried while observing the crowd dancing.
“I’m very excited—it’s such a relief,” she said. “We need to see their return home to their families.”

Families Celebrate with Fireworks
The mom and sibling of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker set off fireworks to mark the announcement of his impending homecoming.
“They are returning!... Matan is on his way home!” Einav Zangauker exclaimed as she held her child.
Viki Cohen, the mother of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, shared online: “My child, you are coming home.”
The joy could be felt throughout the avenues in Tel Aviv after the announcement.
Released Captives Offer Prayers and Raise Glasses
Former British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari celebrated alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, reciting prayers of thankfulness, then cheering “To life”, which means “to life”. She has been campaigning for the freedom of her friends, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their brother Liran Berman posted: “My dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You’re coming home.”
Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was captured on 7 October 2023, with her remains found in an underground passage in Gaza nearly a year after. He has participated with other hostage families in pushing for an agreement which ensures the homecoming of all those still being held within Gaza.
“I hardly believe this is actually happening. We’ve been waiting for such a long time and now it’s here,” he expressed.
He stated he was “shattered” that Carmel will not be among those coming back home yet felt “glowing with joy” for the relatives of the hostages who are finally coming back.
Eitan Horn was taken from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south together with his sibling.
Guarded Hope from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, said she experienced like she was living “a dream state”.
“We’re more than grateful to the President and all he has done for us. It seems that this could be the beginning of the end of this nightmare, and embracing Eitan feels closer than before,” she said.
But she cautioned that it was still too soon to celebrate.
“Before the final captive is here, we’re not opening the bubbly. We will continue struggling... until it’s over,” she said.
“Numerous events might occur until the last moment so this is why we are extremely cautious. We just want to express gratitude to all who participated in the efforts and ensure this agreement is done... We will celebrate only when the last captive is safely home.”
Eitan was captured from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south along with his brother Iair, who was released from detainment in a ceasefire deal earlier this year.
